Los Angeles, CA (December 17, 2019) – Mixografia is pleased to present Histories, a solo exhibition celebrating the release of Jacob Hashimoto’s latest series of three Mixografia prints. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, January 11 from 4 – 6pm, at Mixografia, (1419 East Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA. 90011).  The event is free and open to the public, with complimentary valet parking and refreshments.

 

In his upcoming series of three Mixografia prints, Jacob Hashimoto introduces a spontaneous approach to his familiar visual language. Contrasting much of his body of work, in which the use of string primarily functions as a means of suspending intricately crafted rice paper kites, the string itself serves as the focal point of Hashimoto’s three panoramic compositions. Clustered in small groupings, the kites are seemingly suspended by gravity and tangled in thickets of threads that are simultaneously rhythmic and dissonant. 

 

Hashimoto constructs his compositions upon worn surfaces and found objects taken from the workshop to emphasize their improvisational character, and to integrate the making of the objects with the experimental nature of the workshop environment itself. The three artworks appear to be constructed on a punctured flattening board, outlined by wrinkled packing tape; the threads themselves seem to dangle from metal screws; the background’s paper surface is decorated with drill holes and scattered technical notes from former projects, indicating the continuous rhythm of the workshop’s production process. Each of these elements comes together convincingly as singular prints made from handmade paper, encasing Hashimoto’s momentary and spontaneous assemblages in a process of deliberate reproduction.

 

Jacob Hashimoto lives and works in Ossining, New York. His work has been featured at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; The Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, WA; Rice Gallery at Rice University, Houston, TX; MACRO– Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Roma, Rome, Italy; Bildmuseet-Umeå, University, Umeå, Sweden; Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, Italy; The Schauwerk Foundation, Sindelfingen, Germany; MoCA/PDC– The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Sheehan Gallery, Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA; The Saastamoinen Foundation (EMMA), Espoo, Finland, among others. Hashimoto recently exhibited at Makasiini Contemporary, Turku, Finland. Hashimoto is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
