Jonas Wood: Three Clippings

Mixografia

Los Angeles, CA – Mixografia is pleased to present Three Clippings, a new suite of prints by Jonas Wood. A reception for the artist will take place at Mixografia, 1419 East Adams Boulevard, on Saturday, November 10th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Jonas Wood’s first collaboration with Mixografia features a suite of three prints derived from his clippings series, in which he clips plant imagery from his other works and re-contextualizes them as stand-alone subjects. These recent prints depict flowers on stems, simplified to sharp-edged fields of solid color and set against neutral white backgrounds of handmade paper. Layers of leaves and petals overlap and protrude from the paper’s surface in a layered low relief, leaving the perspective compressed to a flattened frontal view.

Wood emphasizes subtle tonal variations throughout each flower; while each print maintains harmonious color arrangements, few elements are exactly alike. Similarly, Wood renders each shape with stylized irregularity, suggesting organic rhythms that manifest in nature. Though he varies his subject matter greatly throughout his body of work, Wood nevertheless sustains an aesthetic and thematic thread in all of his projects.

Wood is noted for his synthesis of art historical references from Classical Antiquity and Modernism, together with contemporary subjects from popular culture and his own life. He accesses a visual language that is characteristically his own while establishing himself in the broader scope of contemporary figurative art. He moves between playful abstraction and a disciplined technical approach, participating in an interplay of tradition and experimentation that sits at the root of the lineage he follows in.

Jonas Wood was born in 1977 in Boston, Massachusetts. He received an MFA from the University of Washington in 2002. His work has been included in gallery and museum exhibitions worldwide, including: Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles; Gagosian; Anton Kern Gallery, New York; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles; The Broad, Los Angeles; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut, Lebanon; Museum Voorlinden, The Netherlands; Musee d’art Contemporain de Lyon, France; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He was the 2017 Honoree for TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art in Dallas. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
